The Garappa (ガラッパ, Garappa) is a creature from Japanese folklore.
Description
The Garappa (not to be confused with its regional counterpart, the Kappa) Is an amphibious creature hailing from the islands of Kyūshū in southern Japan. They are often described as having the limbs of a frog or monkey, the shell of a tortoise, a beak like a duck or a waterfowl, long black hair, and a bony plate or dish on top of their head.
Behavior
According to most accounts, Garappa are shy creatures and actively try to stay out of the detection of humans. Garappa are shy are solitary and are usually found in rivers and ponds in sparsely populated areas. Garappa are often heard rather than seen and emit a wide variety of calls. Other accounts describe Garappa as quite the mischief-makers that often prank humans. Despite the Garappa's meek behavior and small stature, they are incredibly strong and can overpower humans and other Garappa with relative ease.
Garappa are also sexually aggressive and have been known to rape women. Despite all this Garappa are dedicated to keeping their word and when captured or bested in a contest by humans, they can be forced by their victors to promise to stop drowning people, playing pranks, making noises in the woods, or similar concessions. Because of this Garappa are revered by some Shinto sects.
